As is common in the Napa Valley, this property borders a large serpentine rock outcropping, creating technical and logistic challenges in designing a pool area. This steep section of the back yard was transformed from a rocky slope into a large pool and deck area complete with an outdoor shower and spa.

A large swimming pool set into the sunken pool deck area sits adjacent to the semi-private outdoor shower. The custom-designed raised spa is nestled into a curve of the existing rock outcropping a short distance away, and both are enhanced by the views from the hillside.

A wonderful sustainable feature of this project was that we were able to use the copious amounts of stone from the pool excavation as a veneer for all of the retaining walls – lending a unique muted pastel color scheme to the pool area. Colorful water wise and deer resistant plants helped to complete the look and require little water or maintenance.
